La denominación genérica de tasa de migración1 comprende todas las tasas destinadas a medir la frecuencia de las migraciones que tienen lugar en el seno de una población. En ausencia de alguna indicación en contra, la expresión tasa de migración debe entenderse siempre en el sentido de tasa anual de migración2. Esta tasa puede obtenerse relacionando el número de migrantes registrados anualmente o el promedio de ellos durante un cierto período, con la población media (401-5) de ese mismo período. De manera idéntica se calcula la tasa anual de migración neta3 y la tasa anual de migración total4 relacionando las migración neta o la migración total con la población media. Puede calcularse un índice de compensación5 o índice de efectividad migratoria5 o índice de efectividad5 comprendido entre 0 y (±) 1 relacionando el valor absoluto de la migración neta de una división territorial con su migración total: cuando el índice es igual a la unidad, la migración de la división territorial tiene un sentido único; cuando es nulo, las entradas se compensan exactamente con las salidas.
- 2. Esta tasa también puede calcularse usando otros denominadores: la población al comienzo o al final del período o el promedio de años vividos por la población del área considerada.
