Cuando se dispone de la información sobre los migrantes entre dos zonas de un país para un período determinado se puede calcular el índice de intensidad migratoria1 de A hacia B dividiendo el número de emigrantes de A hacia B durante el período, por el producto del número de habitantes de B al final del período por el número de habitantes de A al principio del período y sobrevivientes hasta el final del mismo. Este índice dividido por la relación entre el total de migrantes y el cuadrado de la población total del país da un índice de intensidad relativa2 o índice de preferencia2. Si se usa en el numerador la corriente neta (805-9) de migrantes entre las dos zonas, el resultado constituye el índice de intensidad migratoria3. El cociente entre el valor absoluto de la corriente neta y la corriente total constituye el índice de compensación de las corrientes migratorias4 o índice de efectividad de la corriente migratoria4.
- 1. Este indice se puede interpretar como la probabilidad de que dos individuos vivos al final del período y elegidos al azar, uno entre los que residen en A al principio del período y el otro entre aquellos que residen en 6 al final del mismo sean iguales. La disponibilidad de los datos impone a veces el uso de otros denominadores. También se utilizan índices que hacen intervenir la población de las dos zonas en la misma fecha, perdiendo por lo tanto su significado probabilista.
- 2. Se calcula también otro índice, producto del índice de intensidad migratoria por la población total del país.
- 3. Multiplicando el índice de intensidad migratoria neta por la población total del país, se obtiene un nuevo índice.
