La determinación mediante un censo o encuesta de los migrantes y de sus características permite establecer estadísticas sobre los migrantes1, estadísticas sobre los inmigrantes2 o estadísticas sobre los emigrantes2 y estadísticas sobre su lugar de nacimiento3, según las preguntas que se incluyan en estas investigaciones. Mediante estas pregutas se conocen sólo los emigrantes (802-5) dentro del país o del área investigada; no se obtiene información acerca de los emigrantes internacionales (ver 803). Los inmigrantes se conocen cualquiera sea el lugar de origen.
- 2. Cuando se pregunta solamente por la fecha de llegada en la residencia actual (802-3) se obtienen estadísticas sobre la duración de la presencia (801-8) en la residencia actual. En el caso de consultar sólo acerca de la residencia anterior (802-2) se obtienen estadísticas sobre la residencia anterior. En años recientes, primero en censos experimentales y luego en encuestas demográficas nacionales llevadas a cabo en varios países de América Latina, se han incluido preguntas, con resultados alentadores, destinadas a obtener estimaciones de la emigración internacional con datos recogidos en el país de origen.
